"Tokyo native Shugo Tokumaru fashions a brand of highly unusual bedroom folk that at times recalls the lo-fi experiments of Fonal artists like Islaja, at others brings to mind the warm electronic sound world of The Boats, but at others really doesn't sound like anyone else. Using an array of string instruments and chiming glockenspiels Shugo weaves gentle instrumental backdrops for a soft, plaintive voice, as on pieces like 'Switch' which somehow evoke a kind of '60s psychedelia while embodying a modern DIY spirit. Elsewhere, a freakishly inventive instrumental like 'Paparazzi' sounds like some insane children's TV theme tune or a Takoma ragtime exercise speeded up to the point of ridiculousness. In amongst all the quirky, homespun arrangements you'll find yourself struck by the quality of the songs here though, which are always sufficiently compelling to keep you locked into Shugo Tokumaru's unique sonic universe."
